ELENI DRAKE TRIPPY TEA

London songwriter Eleni Drake shares her new Songs On Sundays EP, a soul-soaked wooze cruise that’s ideal for a lazy weekend listen. The EP features singles ‘Ceilings’ and ‘4’, although we’re sipping the soothing vibes of ‘Trippy Tea’ this time around. Reminiscent of the Misch siblings, Puma Blue, and Jorja Smith, it’s clear that Drake belongs to the distinct London patchwork of soul, jazz and indie songwriting. ‘Trippy Tea’, as well as the whole EP, explores a personal realisation that the object of Drake’s affections, as portrayed in her former Blue EP, is a fantasy, and the reality is much more bitter. As the young artist shares: “After the love bubble had disappeared, I realised what my friends meant, when they said that person was actually “scum” and how delusional I was to even get into a relationship with this person in the first place.” In spite of this post-love context, ‘Trippy Tea’ is an optimistic song. The textures are warm, organic and nurturing, as well as Drake’s own messages of self-assurance: “I think I’m alright.” - Hannah Thacker
